June 11th, 2007

Our new site is designed as blog. Feel free to explore it and then add comments. We hope you will enjoy the new look and make use of it’s direct communication style and interactivity.

This web site introduces Lancaster Band, the original ensemble formed in 1974 ,one of the bands that spearheaded ska in South Africa and regarded as ranking amongst its seminal groups. It’s three-decade history has been characterized by some of the country’s most dynamic musicians. During the 1970’s Lancaster Band became renowned for its power-house performances, attracting a wide spectrum of enthusiastic audiences amidst the control of segregated entertainment imposed by the apartheid government. More than thirty years later Lancaster Band delivers an energetic show, anchored by the consistency of its long-standing line up.

Armchair theatre with the City Bowl Mizers

June 9th, 2007

On May 18th, the Lanc’s and Caiptain Stu and the Llamas shared the Independent Archair Theatre stage with the City Bowl Mizers:

Words from Armchair site: The City Bowl Mizers are a five-piece Pop / Rock & Roll band hailing from the sunny shores of Durban, South Africa! They play an incredibly fun and oh-so-catchy fusion of danceable Rock & Roll and early Pop. Although they do draw loads of influence from bands that have been known to grace this sort of sound, they play a style of music that is both fresh and completely their own and has the ability to appeal to almost anyone no matter their age group or musical preference.

It was great clean well crafted POP … almost 1950 reborn in Durban … great to hear guitars sound like guitars and songs that took time to craft … very very nice!!!!!

Kurt of the City Bowl Mizers

It was also amazing to discover that Kurt, the Mizer guitarist, is the offspring of the 1980’s Durban punk rockers Wild Youth bass man. We giged with the Durban punks in Cape Town in the early 80’s (see History). I wonder if they remember the Freedom Farm Festivals in Hermanus … and waking up on the lounge floor of our mate’s little house in the village after a night of high energy on stage and too many toxins off stage …What a tiny world.

And the Llamas .. well they just get better and better !!!

See a review of the gig in news & reviews section.
